Ultrex QUEST Sonar Guide: Dual Spectrum CHIRP vs MEGA Down Imaging vs MEGA Side Imaging
Share
Why Sonar Package Matters
Every Minn Kota Ultrex QUEST includes an integrated transducer — protected inside the lower unit, with no external mounting required. The sonar package you choose determines what you can see when connected to a compatible Humminbird fish finder.
This isn't a minor upgrade decision. The sonar package you select shapes how you find fish, how you read structure, and how effectively you use the motor's GPS features. Choosing the wrong package means paying for capabilities you won't use — or missing the ones you need most.
The Ultrex QUEST is available with two sonar packages:
- Dual Spectrum CHIRP — traditional 2D sonar with dual-frequency capability
- MEGA Down + Side Imaging — near-photographic imaging beneath and beside the boat
The Quick Answer
| Sonar Package | Best For | Choose If... |
|---|---|---|
| Dual Spectrum CHIRP | Traditional sonar, forward-facing sonar users | You already run Livescope, MEGA Live, or prefer 2D sonar |
| MEGA Down + Side Imaging | Structure fishing, tournament scouting, Humminbird users | You want to see offshore structure before you fish it |
Dual Spectrum CHIRP
What It Is
Dual Spectrum CHIRP uses compressed high-intensity radar pulse (CHIRP) technology to transmit a continuous sweep of frequencies rather than a single frequency. The result is better target separation, more detail at depth, and a cleaner sonar picture than traditional single-frequency sonar.
The "dual spectrum" capability allows you to switch between a wide beam for broad coverage and a narrow beam for precise depth and target detail — giving you flexibility depending on conditions and fishing technique.
What You See
- Traditional 2D sonar view — the format most anglers already know
- Fish arches and baitfish clouds with excellent separationBottom hardness and composition
- Depth readings with high accuracy
- Structure and cover in a familiar vertical format
Who It's For
- Anglers who already run a forward-facing sonar unit (MEGA Live, Livescope, Active Target) and don't need integrated Side Imaging
- Anglers who prefer traditional 2D sonar and are comfortable reading it
- Deep-water structure fishermen who rely on precise depth and target separation
- Anglers who want the Ultrex QUEST platform at a lower price point
- Walleye and multi-species anglers who primarily use traditional sonar
When MEGA Down + Side Imaging Is the Better Choice
If you spend significant time locating offshore structure — brush piles, timber, ledges, humps, and rock piles — before you fish it, MEGA Side Imaging gives you a capability that CHIRP simply can't match: the ability to scan both sides of the boat simultaneously and see structure in near-photographic detail before you drive over it.

MEGA Down + Side Imaging
What It Is
MEGA Down + Side Imaging combines two distinct sonar technologies in a single integrated transducer. MEGA Down Imaging fires a thin, high-frequency beam directly beneath the boat for near-photographic vertical detail. MEGA Side Imaging fires beams to both sides of the boat simultaneously, creating a wide-angle view of the bottom and water column that traditional sonar cannot replicate.
Together, they give you a complete picture of the water around the boat — what's beside it, what's beneath it, and where fish are relating to structure — before you make the first cast.
MEGA Side Imaging — See What's Beside the Boat
- Scan both sides simultaneously — cover more water with every pass
- Locate structure before driving over it — find brush piles, timber, and rock without spooking fish
- Near-photographic detail — distinguish individual logs, rocks, and fish with exceptional clarity
- Cover water more efficiently — identify productive areas faster during pre-fish and tournament days
- Critical for offshore bass fishing — ledges, humps, deep points, and open-water structure
MEGA Down Imaging — See What's Beneath the Boat
- High-detail vertical imaging — see fish, baitfish, and structure directly beneath the boat
- Better fish-to-structure separation — distinguish fish holding tight to brush or timber
- Excellent for vertical presentations — drop shots, football jigs, and deep jigging
- Superior bottom detail — identify bottom composition, transitions, and depth changes
Who It's For
- Tournament anglers who fish offshore structure — ledges, brush piles, timber, humps, and deep points
- Anglers who want to see the bottom before they fish it
- Humminbird APEX, SOLIX, or HELIX users who want maximum One-Boat Network integration
- Multi-species anglers on Great Lakes and large reservoirs
- Anglers who want the complete imaging package in a single integrated unit
The Integrated Transducer Advantage
Because the transducer is built into the lower unit of the trolling motor, there's no external transducer to mount, no additional cables to run, and no risk of damage from debris or shallow water. The transducer is always in the right position — pointing straight down and to the sides — regardless of how the motor is angled.

Side-by-Side Comparison
| Feature | Dual Spectrum CHIRP | MEGA Down + Side Imaging |
|---|---|---|
| Sonar view | Traditional 2D | Down imaging + side imaging |
| Scan coverage | Beneath the boat (cone) | Beneath + both sides of the boat |
| Image detail | Good target separation | Near-photographic clarity |
| Structure identification | Good | Excellent |
| Pre-fishing efficiency | Standard | Significantly faster |
| Best display pairing | Any Humminbird | Humminbird APEX, SOLIX, HELIX |
| Forward-facing sonar compatible | Yes — ideal pairing | Yes — adds side/down coverage |
| Price | Lower | Higher |
What About MEGA Down Imaging Only?
Some Minn Kota models are available with MEGA Down Imaging only — without Side Imaging. This provides the high-detail vertical view beneath the boat but does not include the wide-angle side scanning capability. For most tournament anglers, the MEGA Down + Side Imaging package is the better investment, as Side Imaging is where the greatest efficiency gains come from during pre-fish and tournament days.
Do I Need a Specific Fish Finder?
Yes. The integrated transducer requires a compatible Humminbird fish finder connected via Ethernet cable to display sonar images. The motor will function without a fish finder, but the sonar capability will not be active.
Compatible displays include:
- Humminbird APEX — flagship display, full MEGA imaging support
- Humminbird SOLIX — premium side imaging and networking
- Humminbird HELIX — mid-range display with MEGA imaging support (select models)
All compatible displays connect via One-Boat Network, which also enables shared waypoints, integrated navigation, and coordinated boat control between the trolling motor and the fish finder.
The Bottom Line
If you already run a forward-facing sonar unit and primarily use traditional 2D sonar, Dual Spectrum CHIRP is the right choice. It gives you excellent sonar performance at a lower price point and pairs well with any Humminbird display.
If you spend significant time locating offshore structure before you fish it — and you want to cover water more efficiently during pre-fish and tournament days — MEGA Down + Side Imaging is the premium choice. The ability to scan both sides of the boat simultaneously and see structure in near-photographic detail before you drive over it is a genuine competitive advantage.
