Ultrex QUEST vs Ulterra QUEST: Which Minn Kota Trolling Motor Is Right for You?
Share
Two Motors. One Platform. Very Different Philosophies.
The Minn Kota Ultrex QUEST and Ulterra QUEST share the same QUEST brushless motor platform — the same torque, the same efficiency, the same dual-voltage 24V/36V flexibility, and the same Spot-Lock GPS anchoring. But they are built around fundamentally different steering philosophies, and that difference determines which motor is right for you.
This isn't a question of which motor is better. It's a question of how you fish — and what you want your trolling motor to feel like when you're on the water.

Steering: The Defining Difference
Ultrex QUEST — Cable Steering with Power Assist
Ultrex uses a traditional cable-steer system with an electric Power Steering assist. When you move the foot pedal, the motor responds immediately — mechanically, directly, with zero lag. There's no electric motor interpreting your input and translating it into movement. The connection between your foot and the prop is direct.
This is why tournament anglers have chosen Ultrex for decades. In tight quarters, around docks, in current, and in wind, cable steering gives you the precise, instant response that electric steering can't fully replicate. It's the same feel anglers have built their fishing around for years — with GPS and brushless efficiency added on top.
- Instant mechanical response — zero lag between foot and prop
- Natural feel anglers already know from traditional cable motors
- Precise positioning in tight quarters, current, and wind
- Tournament-preferred steering feel
- Power Steering reduces effort without sacrificing response
Ulterra QUEST — Electric Steering
Ulterra uses fully electric steering. The foot pedal sends a signal to an electric motor that turns the head. The result is smooth, consistent steering with less physical effort — but with a slightly different feel than cable steering. Electric steering is well-suited to anglers who prioritize ease of use and automation over the direct mechanical feel of cable steering.
- Smooth, consistent electric steering
- Less physical effort required
- Works seamlessly with Auto Stow & Deploy
- Preferred by anglers who want the motor to do more of the work
Auto Stow & Deploy — Ulterra Only
This is the feature that most clearly separates the two motors. Ulterra QUEST includes Auto Stow & Deploy, which allows the motor to raise and lower itself at the push of a button — no manual lifting required. Combined with Power Trim, which adjusts the motor's angle in the water, Ulterra offers a level of automation that Ultrex simply doesn't provide.
For anglers who fish alone, who have physical limitations that make manual deployment difficult, or who simply want maximum convenience, Auto Stow & Deploy is a significant advantage.
Ultrex uses a Lift-Assist mount — a nitrogen gas spring that reduces the effort required to manually deploy and retrieve the motor. It's smooth and effective, but it still requires manual operation.
| Feature | Ultrex QUEST | Ulterra QUEST |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | Manual with Lift-Assist | Automatic (button press) |
| Retrieval | Manual with Lift-Assist | Automatic (button press) |
| Depth adjustment | Fixed at mount | Power Trim (adjustable) |
| Solo fishing convenience | Good | Excellent |

Which One Is Right for You?
Choose Ultrex QUEST if:
- You want the instant, mechanical response of cable steering
- You fish tournaments where precise boat control is a competitive advantage
- You've fished cable-steer motors for years and don't want to change the feel

A Note on Terrova QUEST
If you want electric steering but don't need Auto Stow & Deploy, the Terrova QUEST is a third option. It uses the same QUEST brushless platform with electric steering, but without the automated deployment system. It's a versatile middle ground between Ultrex and Ulterra.
