Spot-Lock with Jog — How It Works
Spot-Lock is Minn Kota's GPS-based anchoring system. When you activate it, the trolling motor uses its onboard GPS receiver to record your exact position and then continuously adjusts heading and thrust to hold that position — automatically compensating for wind, current, and tide. The result is a virtual anchor that keeps your boat within a few feet of your chosen spot without you touching the controls.
Jog is the feature that makes Spot-Lock genuinely useful in real fishing situations. Rather than dropping anchor and being locked to a single point, Jog lets you make precise, incremental position adjustments — moving the boat a few feet in any direction — without disengaging Spot-Lock. You stay anchored. You just move the anchor.
How Spot-Lock Works
When you press the Spot-Lock button on your wireless remote, compatible Humminbird unit, or the One-Boat Network app, the motor records your GPS coordinates and enters anchoring mode. From that point, the motor's control system continuously monitors your actual position against the saved coordinates and makes real-time corrections — adjusting motor speed, direction, and steering to counteract any drift.
The system works in all conditions where GPS signal is available. In calm water with no wind or current, the motor may barely need to run. In strong tidal current or wind, it will work harder — but the result is the same: your boat stays put.
Spot-Lock accuracy is typically within a few feet of the saved position under normal conditions. In extreme wind or current, drift may be slightly greater, but the motor will always be working to return to the saved point rather than allowing uncontrolled drift.
How Jog Works
Jog is activated while Spot-Lock is engaged. Using the directional controls on your wireless remote, compatible Humminbird unit, or the One-Boat Network app, you can move the Spot-Lock anchor point incrementally — typically in 5-foot increments — in any direction: forward, back, left, or right.
Each Jog command moves the saved GPS anchor point by one increment in the selected direction. The motor then holds that new position with the same precision as the original Spot-Lock point. You can Jog multiple times in sequence to reposition the boat several feet or more from the original anchor point.
Critically, Jog does not disengage Spot-Lock. The boat remains in anchoring mode throughout — you're simply moving the anchor point, not releasing it. This means you can make precise position adjustments without the boat drifting freely between moves.
Why Jog Matters for Fishing
The practical value of Jog becomes clear the moment you're fishing structure. You drop Spot-Lock on what looks like the right position — but the fish are holding 10 feet to the left of where you're casting. Without Jog, you'd have to disengage Spot-Lock, reposition the boat manually, and re-engage — a process that takes time, creates noise, and often results in a slightly different position than you intended.
With Jog, you press the directional button twice and the boat moves precisely 10 feet to the left. Spot-Lock re-engages at the new position. The whole adjustment takes seconds and the boat never drifts freely.
This is especially valuable in saltwater fishing scenarios where precision positioning is critical:
- Reef and wreck fishing — holding position over a specific piece of structure while adjusting to keep baits in the strike zone
- Inlet and jetty fishing — working along a rock wall or channel edge without drifting into structure
- Grass flat fishing — staying on the productive edge of a flat while adjusting for wind direction changes
- Offshore structure — holding over a specific depth contour or bottom feature while working different angles
- Dock and bridge fishing — precise positioning around pilings and structure without constant manual steering
In freshwater, Jog is equally valuable for bass anglers working laydowns, dock edges, and rock piles — any situation where precise, repeatable positioning gives you a casting advantage.
Spot-Lock with Jog Across Minn Kota Families
Spot-Lock with Jog is available across Minn Kota's premium GPS-equipped trolling motor families. The feature works the same way regardless of which motor you're running — the difference is in how you access it and what platform it's integrated with.
On saltwater motors, Spot-Lock with Jog is a core feature of the Riptide Instinct QUEST and Riptide Ulterra QUEST lineups. Both motors integrate with Humminbird fish finders through the One-Boat Network, allowing Spot-Lock and Jog to be controlled directly from the chart plotter without reaching for a separate remote.
On freshwater motors, Spot-Lock with Jog is standard on the Terrova QUEST and Ulterra QUEST families.
Controlling Spot-Lock and Jog
Depending on your motor and setup, you can control Spot-Lock and Jog through several interfaces:
- Wireless remote — included with all Spot-Lock-equipped motors; dedicated Spot-Lock button and directional Jog controls
- One-Boat Network app — smartphone control via Bluetooth; full Spot-Lock and Jog functionality
- Compatible Humminbird fish finder — chart plotter integration; Spot-Lock and Jog accessible directly from the sonar/GPS unit
- Foot pedal — on motors equipped with a foot pedal, Spot-Lock can typically be engaged from the pedal as well
Spot-Lock vs. Traditional Anchoring
Traditional anchoring requires deploying and retrieving physical anchor gear — a process that takes time, creates noise, and limits your ability to reposition quickly. In tidal water, a traditional anchor also swings with current changes, meaning your boat's position relative to structure changes throughout the tide cycle.
Spot-Lock holds a fixed GPS position regardless of current direction changes. As the tide turns and current shifts, the motor adjusts to keep the boat on the same coordinates — your position relative to structure stays consistent even as conditions change around you.
For anglers fishing in areas where anchoring is restricted or impractical — shallow flats, reef areas, or locations with heavy boat traffic — Spot-Lock provides a practical alternative that doesn't require deploying physical gear.
Tips for Getting the Most from Spot-Lock with Jog
- Engage Spot-Lock before you need it — activate it as you approach your target position rather than after you've already drifted past it
- Use Jog to fine-tune, not reposition — for large position changes, disengage Spot-Lock, reposition, and re-engage; use Jog for incremental adjustments of a few feet to a few dozen feet
- Account for current when setting your initial position — in strong current, set Spot-Lock slightly uptide of your target so the motor holds you on the structure rather than fighting to return to a position downtide
- Keep your battery charged — Spot-Lock requires the motor to run continuously in current or wind; a well-charged battery system ensures the motor can maintain position throughout a long fishing session
- Use One-Boat Network integration — controlling Spot-Lock and Jog from your Humminbird unit keeps your eyes on the sonar and your hands free for fishing
