The One-Boat Network (OBN) is the communication system that connects compatible Minn Kota trolling motors with compatible Humminbird fish finders, allowing both devices to share data and be controlled from a single interface. Instead of operating your trolling motor and fish finder as separate, independent systems, the One-Boat Network integrates them into a unified boat control platform — where your chart plotter can control your motor, your motor can respond to sonar data, and both systems share GPS and navigation information in real time.

It's the technology that makes features like Follow Mode possible, and it significantly expands how you can control Spot-Lock, Drift Mode, and other GPS features from your Humminbird unit.

How the One-Boat Network Works

The One-Boat Network connects your Minn Kota trolling motor and Humminbird fish finder via an Ethernet cable — the same type of cable used in computer networking, adapted for marine use. The cable runs from the trolling motor's control head or junction box to the Humminbird unit's Ethernet port.

Once connected, the two devices communicate continuously. The Humminbird unit can send commands to the trolling motor (engage Spot-Lock, adjust Jog position, activate Follow Mode), and the trolling motor can send status information back to the Humminbird (current GPS position, motor status, heading). Both devices share the same GPS data, eliminating the need for separate GPS receivers on each unit.

The connection is wired — not wireless — which provides a reliable, low-latency communication link that isn't subject to Bluetooth range limitations or radio frequency interference. For features like Follow Mode that require continuous, real-time data exchange between the sonar and the motor, a wired connection is essential.

What the One-Boat Network Enables

The One-Boat Network unlocks capabilities that aren't possible when the trolling motor and fish finder operate independently:

  • Humminbird control of Spot-Lock — engage, disengage, and Jog Spot-Lock directly from your Humminbird chart plotter without reaching for the wireless remote; your eyes stay on the sonar, your hands stay on the rod
  • Follow Mode — the motor automatically follows depth contours, vegetation edges, or bottom hardness lines identified by the Humminbird sonar; requires OBN connection to function
  • Drift Mode control from Humminbird — set and adjust drift speed and direction from the chart plotter
  • Shared GPS — both the motor and fish finder use the same GPS position data, eliminating discrepancies between separate GPS receivers
  • Route Recording and Playback — record your path and replay it automatically; the motor follows the recorded route while you fish
  • Motor status on Humminbird display — see trolling motor status, GPS mode, and heading information directly on the fish finder screen

Compatible Hardware

One-Boat Network compatibility requires specific hardware on both the motor and fish finder side:

  • Riptide Instinct QUEST (saltwater)
  • Riptide Ulterra QUEST (saltwater)
  • Terrova QUEST (freshwater)
  • Ulterra QUEST (freshwater)
  • Select earlier Terrova and Ulterra models with i-Pilot Link

Compatible Humminbird fish finders:

  • APEX series
  • SOLIX series
  • HELIX series (select models with One-Boat Network capability — check your specific model)

Not all HELIX models support the full One-Boat Network feature set. Entry-level HELIX units may support basic OBN functions but not Follow Mode or full Spot-Lock control. Check your Humminbird unit's specifications to confirm which OBN features are supported.

Setting Up the One-Boat Network

Setup requires a physical Ethernet cable connection between the trolling motor and the Humminbird unit. The cable routing depends on your boat's layout, but the general process is:

  1. Run the Ethernet cable from the trolling motor's Ethernet port (typically at the motor head or a junction box near the bow) to the Humminbird unit at the helm
  2. Connect both ends securely — the connectors are keyed and lock in place
  3. Power on both devices
  4. Navigate to the One-Boat Network setup menu on the Humminbird unit to confirm the connection and configure preferences

Minn Kota includes a 30-foot Ethernet cable with QUEST motors — sufficient for most center console and bay boat installations. Longer cables are available for larger vessels where the helm is farther from the bow.

Using One-Boat Network Features from the Humminbird

Once connected, trolling motor controls appear on the Humminbird unit's display. The exact interface varies by Humminbird model, but generally:

  • Spot-Lock — tap the Spot-Lock icon on the Humminbird display or use a dedicated button on compatible units; Jog controls appear on-screen for position adjustment
  • Follow Mode — select a depth contour, vegetation edge, or bottom hardness line on the sonar display and activate Follow Mode; the motor begins tracking the selected feature
  • Drift Mode — access from the trolling motor control panel on the Humminbird display; set speed and direction
  • Route Playback — select a recorded route from the Humminbird's route library and activate playback; the motor follows the route automatically

One-Boat Network and the One-Boat Network App

The One-Boat Network app (available for iOS and Android) provides a third control interface for OBN-equipped motors. The app connects to the trolling motor via Bluetooth — separately from the wired Ethernet connection to the Humminbird — and provides Spot-Lock, Jog, Drift Mode, and other controls from a smartphone.

The app and the Humminbird unit can both be connected simultaneously. This gives you multiple control options: the wireless remote for quick access, the Humminbird for integrated sonar-based control, and the app for smartphone convenience.

Why One-Boat Network Matters for Saltwater Fishing

In saltwater fishing, the integration between sonar and boat control is particularly valuable. Offshore structure fishing, reef fishing, and inshore flat fishing all involve complex underwater terrain where the ability to respond quickly to what the sonar shows — without taking your hands off the rod — directly affects fishing effectiveness.

Being able to engage Spot-Lock the moment the sonar shows fish holding on a specific piece of structure, or to activate Follow Mode to track a reef edge without manual steering, keeps you fishing rather than managing boat position. In conditions where fish are spooky or structure is complex, the speed and precision of OBN-integrated control is a meaningful advantage.

Troubleshooting One-Boat Network Connections

If your Humminbird unit isn't recognizing the trolling motor after connecting:

  • Check the cable connection at both ends — ensure the Ethernet connectors are fully seated and locked; a partially connected cable is the most common cause of OBN connection failures
  • Inspect the cable for damage — a pinched, cut, or corroded cable will prevent communication; replace if damaged
  • Verify compatibility — confirm your specific Humminbird model supports One-Boat Network; not all HELIX models do
  • Check software versions — both the trolling motor firmware and Humminbird software should be current; outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues
  • Power cycle both devices — turn off both the motor and fish finder, wait 30 seconds, and power back on
