Ultrex QUEST vs Terrova QUEST: Which Minn Kota Trolling Motor Is Right for You?
Share
Same Platform. Different Steering Philosophy.
The Minn Kota Ultrex QUEST and Terrova QUEST share the same QUEST brushless motor platform — the same torque, the same efficiency, the same dual-voltage 24V/36V flexibility, and the same Spot-Lock GPS anchoring. The difference between them comes down to one fundamental question: how do you want to steer?
Ultrex QUEST uses cable steering. Terrova QUEST uses electric steering. That single difference shapes the entire fishing experience — how the motor feels underfoot, how it responds in tight quarters, and which anglers it's built for.

Steering: The Only Meaningful Difference
Ultrex QUEST — Cable Steering with Power Assist
Ultrex uses a traditional cable-steer system with an electric Power Steering assist. When you move the foot pedal, the motor responds immediately — mechanically, directly, with zero lag. The connection between your foot and the prop is direct and physical. There's no signal, no electric motor, no translation layer between your input and the motor's response.
This is the steering feel that tournament anglers have relied on for decades. In tight quarters, around docks, in current, and in wind, cable steering gives you the precise, instant response that electric steering can't fully replicate. If you've fished a cable-steer motor for years, Ultrex QUEST will feel exactly like what you already know — with QUEST brushless efficiency and advanced GPS added on top.
- Instant mechanical response — zero lag between foot and prop
- Natural feel anglers already know from traditional cable motors
- Precise positioning in tight quarters, current, and wind
- Tournament-preferred steering feel
- Power Steering reduces effort without sacrificing response
- Lift-Assist mount for smooth manual deployment and retrieval
Terrova QUEST — Electric Steering
Terrova uses fully electric steering. The foot pedal sends a signal to an electric motor that turns the head. The result is smooth, consistent steering with less physical effort — but with a different feel than cable steering. Electric steering is well-suited to anglers who prefer a lighter touch on the pedal, who fish in conditions where smooth, gradual steering adjustments are preferred, or who are transitioning from electric-steer motors and want to stay with a familiar feel.
Unlike Ulterra QUEST, Terrova does not include Auto Stow & Deploy or Power Trim. Deployment and retrieval are still manual — but without the Lift-Assist mount that Ultrex includes.
- Smooth, consistent electric steering
- Less physical effort required at the pedal
- Familiar feel for anglers coming from electric-steer motors
- No Auto Stow & Deploy — manual deployment required
- No Power Trim — depth is fixed at mount
Deployment: Lift-Assist vs Manual
One practical difference worth noting: Ultrex QUEST includes a Lift-Assist mount — a nitrogen gas spring that significantly reduces the effort required to manually deploy and retrieve the motor. Terrova QUEST does not include Lift-Assist, so deployment requires more physical effort, particularly on larger motors.
Neither motor includes Auto Stow & Deploy — that feature is exclusive to Ulterra QUEST. If automated deployment is important to you, see our Ultrex QUEST vs Ulterra QUEST comparison.
| Feature | Ultrex QUEST | Terrova QUEST |
|---|---|---|
| Deployment | Manual with Lift-Assist | Manual (no Lift-Assist) |
| Retrieval | Manual with Lift-Assist | Manual (no Lift-Assist) |
| Depth adjustment | Fixed at mount | Fixed at mount |
| Auto Stow & Deploy | No | No |
