The Minn Kota Riptide Instinct QUEST and Riptide Terrova QUEST are the two most capable saltwater bow-mount trolling motors in the Minn Kota lineup. The defining difference between the Instinct QUEST and the Terrova QUEST is how the motor deploys and stows.
Riptide Terrova QUEST: Manual stow and deploy. You physically lift the motor to the stowed position and lower it to the fishing position. On smaller vessels with lower bow heights, this is straightforward. On larger offshore vessels, it requires leaning over the bow, lifting a heavy motor, and securing it manually — which becomes increasingly impractical and potentially unsafe as vessel size increases.
Riptide Instinct QUEST: Fully automatic stow and deploy. A single button press via the wireless remote, the One-Boat Network app, or a compatible Humminbird unit deploys the motor to fishing position, trims to depth, and stows it automatically when you’re done. No manual handling required.
On a 20-foot bay boat with a low bow profile, manual deployment is easy. On a 28-foot offshore center console with a high bow and significant freeboard, manual deployment of a heavy trolling motor is a different proposition entirely — especially in offshore conditions.
Power Trim: Instinct QUEST Only
The Instinct QUEST also includes Power Trim, which the Terrova QUEST does not have.
Power Trim allows you to raise or lower the motor’s running depth while underway without leaving the helm or stopping the boat. In offshore conditions where sea state changes quickly, this is a meaningful operational advantage — you can adjust motor depth on the fly to keep the prop submerged in chop without manual intervention.
On smaller inshore vessels in protected waters, Power Trim is a convenience. On large offshore vessels in variable sea conditions, it’s a genuine performance feature.

Which Boat Size Points to Which Motor?
18–22 ft bay boats and inshore center consoles: The Terrova QUEST is typically the right choice. Manual deployment is practical on vessels in this size range, and the price difference between the Terrova and Instinct is meaningful at this level.
20–26 ft mid-size center consoles: Either motor can work depending on bow height, freeboard, and how you fish. If you fish offshore regularly or your bow profile makes manual deployment awkward, the Instinct is worth the premium. If manual deployment is comfortable and you fish primarily nearshore, the Terrova QUEST delivers the same GPS performance at a lower price.
24–30 ft large offshore center consoles and sportfishers: The Instinct QUEST is the correct motor for most vessels in this range. At this size, manual deployment of a heavy trolling motor from an elevated bow in offshore conditions is impractical and potentially unsafe. Auto Stow & Deploy isn’t a luxury at this vessel size — it’s the feature that makes the motor usable.
26–35 ft very large center consoles, sportfishers, pilothouse boats: Instinct QUEST. No question. Manual deployment is not a realistic option on vessels of this size.
Is the Instinct QUEST Worth the Premium Over the Terrova QUEST?
For the right vessel, yes — unambiguously. Auto Stow & Deploy and Power Trim are not incremental upgrades on a large offshore vessel. They’re the features that make the motor practical and safe to operate in the conditions it’s designed for.
For a smaller vessel where manual deployment is easy, the Terrova QUEST delivers identical GPS performance, identical brushless efficiency, and identical Spot-Lock capability at a lower price. The premium for the Instinct is only worth paying if your vessel and fishing conditions actually require it.
The honest answer: if you’re asking whether the Instinct is worth it, measure your bow height and think about how you actually deploy your motor. If the answer is “it’s a workout” or “I have to be careful,” the Instinct is worth every dollar of the premium.
