Which Riptide Is Right for Your Fishing Style?
Every angler fishes differently, and the best trolling motor depends on how you use your boat.
Inshore Flats Fishing
If you primarily target redfish, speckled trout, or snook in shallow water, a Riptide Terrova offers excellent performance without the added cost of premium deployment features.
Bay Fishing
Bay boats often benefit from the additional thrust available in the 80-pound or 112-pound Terrova models. If you regularly fish in wind or tidal current, stepping up to a QUEST model can provide better efficiency and improved boat control. See our guide to the Best Trolling Motors for Bay Boats for more detail.
Offshore Fishing
Larger boats fishing reefs, wrecks, and nearshore structure place greater demands on a trolling motor. The brushless QUEST platform is well suited for these conditions thanks to its higher torque and available 90/115-pound thrust configurations. Read our 2026 Guide to the Best Offshore Trolling Motors for a deeper look.
Tournament Fishing
Competitive anglers often appreciate the convenience of the Ulterra's automatic deployment system. Being able to deploy or stow the motor without leaving the helm can save time and reduce fatigue during a long day on the water.

Riptide Terrova® Review
The Best All-Around Saltwater Trolling Motor for Most Anglers
For years, the Minn Kota Riptide Terrova has been one of the most popular saltwater trolling motors on the market—and for good reason. It offers an excellent balance of performance, durability, and advanced GPS features at a price that's more accessible than the premium Ulterra lineup.
Whether you're fishing Florida grass flats, Louisiana marshes, Texas bays, or nearshore reefs, the Riptide Terrova delivers precise boat control with quiet electric steering and dependable GPS anchoring.
For many anglers, it's the "sweet spot" in the Minn Kota lineup because it includes nearly every feature you'll use on the water without paying extra for automatic deployment.
Best For
The Riptide Terrova is an excellent choice for:
- Flats boats
- Bay boats
- Aluminum fishing boats
- Hybrid bay boats
- Small to mid-size center consoles
- Inshore anglers
- Weekend fishermen
- Tournament anglers who don't need Auto Stow & Deploy
Key Features
Spot-Lock® with Jog
Spot-Lock is one of Minn Kota's most valuable technologies.
Instead of dropping a traditional anchor, Spot-Lock uses GPS to automatically keep your boat positioned within a small area—even in changing wind or current.
This is especially useful when fishing:
- Bridges
- Oyster bars
- Docks
- Offshore reefs
- Rock piles
- Grass edges
Need to move a few feet without resetting your position? The Jog feature lets you reposition your Spot-Lock location in small increments using the wireless remote.
Real-world example: If you're casting to a dock and want to work down the pilings methodically, Jog allows you to shift your boat without starting the trolling motor manually.
Advanced AutoPilot™
AutoPilot automatically steers the boat along a chosen heading.
Rather than constantly correcting the trolling motor yourself, AutoPilot keeps the boat tracking in the direction you select.
This feature is especially useful when:
- Trolling
- Following shorelines
- Fishing grass edges
- Drifting across large flats
Drift Mode
Drift Mode combines GPS and steering corrections to help maintain a controlled drift.
Instead of fighting the wind, the motor automatically adjusts to keep your drift more consistent.
Many anglers use Drift Mode while:
- Fishing live bait
- Casting over expansive grass flats
- Covering open water for striped bass, redfish, or speckled trout
Digital Maximizer™
Battery life matters—especially on long days.
Digital Maximizer varies motor power continuously instead of using fixed speed settings, which helps extend runtime and reduce wasted energy.
That means:
- Longer fishing trips
- Less battery drain
- Smoother speed adjustments
- Better overall efficiency
Corrosion Resistance
Unlike freshwater trolling motors, every Riptide model is engineered specifically for saltwater use.
The Terrova features:
- Corrosion-resistant hardware
- Protective coatings
- Sacrificial anodes
- Sealed electronics
- Saltwater-rated components
With proper rinsing and maintenance after each trip, many anglers enjoy years of dependable service. See our Trolling Motor Maintenance Guide for tips on keeping your Riptide in top shape.
Available Thrust Options
The Riptide Terrova is available in several thrust configurations:
| Thrust | Voltage | Best For | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 55 lb | 12V | Small flats boats and skiffs | View 54" Model | View 60" Model |
| 80 lb | 24V | Most bay boats | View 54" Model | View 60" Model | View 72" Model |
| 112 lb | 36V | Larger bay boats and center consoles | View 60" Model | View 72" Model | View 87" Model |
Recommendation: If you're unsure between two thrust ratings, it's generally better to choose the higher option. Running a motor at lower power settings is often more efficient than constantly operating a smaller motor near its maximum output.
Available Shaft Lengths
Depending on the model, shaft lengths include 54", 60", 72", and 87". See our complete guide on How to Choose the Right Shaft Length to find the best fit for your boat.
Built-In Sonar Options
Depending on the model you choose, the Riptide Terrova can be equipped with:
Dual Spectrum CHIRP
Ideal for anglers who want:
- Better target separation
- Improved fish arches
- Excellent bottom detail
This is an excellent option for most recreational anglers.
MEGA Down Imaging™
Provides highly detailed views directly beneath the boat.
Great for identifying:
- Brush piles
- Rock structure
- Wrecks
- Bottom transitions
MEGA Side Imaging®
Adds detailed side-scanning views of both sides of your boat.
This helps anglers locate:
- Bait schools
- Structure
- Weed edges
- Drop-offs
- Fish holding away from the boat
If you're already using compatible Humminbird electronics, MEGA Side Imaging can be a worthwhile upgrade.
Pros
✔ Excellent value
✔ Proven reliability
✔ Spot-Lock with Jog
✔ Advanced GPS navigation
✔ Multiple thrust options
✔ Multiple sonar configurations
✔ Quiet operation
✔ Easier to maintain than automatic deployment systems
Considerations
- Manual deploy and stow
- Less powerful than QUEST models
- Brushed motor technology
- Not ideal for the largest offshore boats
Our Recommendation
For most saltwater anglers, the Riptide Terrova is the model we recommend first.
It offers nearly every feature you'll use regularly while remaining more affordable than the Ulterra lineup. Unless automatic deployment is a must-have or you're running a heavier offshore boat, the Terrova delivers outstanding performance and long-term value.
Riptide Terrova® QUEST™ Review
More Power. Greater Efficiency. Built for Bigger Boats.
Minn Kota introduced the QUEST platform to meet the needs of anglers running larger boats in more demanding conditions.
While the standard Terrova remains an outstanding choice, the Terrova QUEST takes performance to another level with a redesigned brushless motor platform.
Rather than simply increasing thrust, QUEST improves efficiency, torque, responsiveness, and durability.
For anglers who routinely fish in strong wind, tidal current, or offshore environments, those improvements can make a noticeable difference.
What Makes QUEST Different?
The biggest change is the brushless motor.
Compared with traditional brushed motors, brushless technology offers several advantages:
- Higher efficiency
- Increased torque
- Quieter operation
- Reduced maintenance
- Improved reliability
- Better thermal management
This allows the motor to deliver impressive thrust while using power more effectively.
Dual Voltage Flexibility
Many QUEST models support 24V or 36V operation, giving boat owners flexibility when configuring their electrical systems. See our guide on 24V vs. 36V Trolling Motor Batteries to understand which setup is right for you.
Built for Larger Boats
QUEST is particularly well suited for:
- 22–27 ft bay boats
- Larger center consoles
- Multi-species boats
- Heavy fishing loads
- Boats with multiple passengers
- Anglers who frequently fish in wind or current
If your boat regularly carries extra gear, coolers, livewells, or multiple anglers, the added torque of QUEST helps maintain better boat control.
Improved Boat Control
One of the biggest benefits you'll notice isn't just speed—it's authority.
When wind or current increases, QUEST maintains heading and positioning with less effort.
That translates into:
- More accurate Spot-Lock performance
- Smoother steering corrections
- Better tracking
- Improved battery efficiency
Available Thrust
Most Riptide Terrova QUEST models are available in:
| Thrust | Voltage | Recommended Boats | Shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90 lb | 24V | Large bay boats | View 60" Model | View 72" Model | View 87" Model |
| 90/115 lb | 24V/36V | Bay boats and center consoles | |
| 115 lb | 36V | Larger offshore boats |
Who Should Buy the Terrova QUEST?
Choose the Terrova QUEST if you:
- Frequently fish in wind or current
- Own a larger bay boat or center console
- Want the efficiency of a brushless motor
- Plan to keep your trolling motor for many years
- Value maximum performance over lowest cost
If, however, you primarily fish smaller inshore boats in calmer conditions, the standard Terrova may offer better overall value.
Riptide Ulterra® Review
The Ultimate Convenience for Saltwater Anglers
If the Riptide Terrova is the workhorse of the Minn Kota lineup, the Riptide Ulterra is the luxury model.
It offers nearly every feature found on the Terrova but adds something no other Minn Kota trolling motor can match:
- Auto Stow & Deploy
- Power Trim
With the press of a button, you can deploy the motor into the water, raise or lower its depth, and stow it when you're ready to move—all from the wireless remote, compatible Humminbird fish finder, foot pedal, or One-Boat Network app. Minn Kota remains the only manufacturer offering this combination of automated deployment and trim adjustment.
For anglers who fish alone, frequently change locations, or simply want maximum convenience, the Ulterra can completely change the fishing experience.
Why Auto Stow & Deploy Matters
At first glance, Auto Stow & Deploy might seem like a luxury feature.
After spending a day on the water, however, many anglers decide they never want to go back.
Instead of walking to the bow every time you move:
- Press one button.
- The motor deploys automatically.
- Start fishing.
Ready to move?
- Press another button.
- The motor stows itself securely.
- Idle away immediately.
This is especially valuable when:
- Fishing alone
- Fishing in rough water
- Making frequent spot changes
- Managing a larger center console
- Fishing from an elevated bow
Power Trim
Power Trim is another feature anglers quickly grow to appreciate.
Changing water depth is a constant part of saltwater fishing. Instead of manually adjusting the trolling motor shaft, Power Trim lets you raise or lower the motor electronically without leaving your fishing position.
Best For
The Riptide Ulterra is ideal for:
- Serious inshore anglers
- Offshore fishermen
- Guides
- Charter captains
- Solo anglers
- Anglers with back or shoulder limitations
- Anyone making dozens of moves during a day of fishing
Everything You Love About the Terrova
The Ulterra isn't just about convenience. It also includes Minn Kota's advanced GPS navigation features, including:
- Spot-Lock®
- Spot-Lock with Jog
- Drift Mode
- Advanced AutoPilot
- Route recording
- One-Boat Network compatibility
- Wireless remote
- Electric steer
- Digital Maximizer for improved battery runtime
In other words, you're not giving up any fishing capability—you're adding automation.
Available Thrust Options
The Riptide Ulterra is commonly available in 80 lb (24V) for flats and bay boats, and 112 lb (36V) for large bay boats and center consoles. Browse all Riptide Ulterra models in our store.
Pros
✔ Auto Stow & Deploy
✔ Power Trim
✔ Spot-Lock
✔ Advanced GPS
✔ Excellent resale value
✔ Outstanding for solo anglers
✔ Less physical effort
✔ Premium user experience
Considerations
- Higher purchase price
- More complex mechanical system than a Terrova
- If automatic deployment isn't important to you, the Terrova offers many of the same fishing features at a lower cost
Our Recommendation
If convenience is a priority, the Ulterra is easy to recommend. For anglers who routinely make dozens of moves in a day, the time and effort saved can be significant.

Boat Size Guide: Which Riptide Trolling Motor Fits Your Boat?
One of the most common mistakes anglers make is choosing a trolling motor based only on price. The size and weight of your boat, the typical fishing conditions, and the amount of gear you carry all affect how much thrust you'll need.
The table below provides general recommendations. If your boat falls between two categories, we usually recommend choosing the higher thrust option—especially if you regularly fish in wind, current, or offshore conditions.
| Boat Type | Boat Length | Recommended Thrust | Recommended Models |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flats Boat | 16–18 ft | 55–80 lb | Riptide Terrova 55 or Terrova 80 |
| Bay Boat | 18–21 ft | 80 lb | Riptide Terrova 80 |
| Bay Boat | 21–24 ft | 112 lb | Riptide Terrova 112 or Terrova QUEST 90/115 |
| Center Console | 22–26 ft | 90–115 lb | Terrova QUEST or Ulterra QUEST |
| Offshore Center Console | 24–28 ft | 115 lb | Ulterra QUEST 90/115 |
Pro Tip: If you regularly fish with multiple passengers, a full livewell, extra fuel, or heavy coolers, size your trolling motor for the loaded weight of your boat—not the empty hull.
How Much Thrust Do You Need?
Thrust is the amount of pushing power your trolling motor produces. More thrust doesn't necessarily make your boat travel much faster—it gives you more control in challenging conditions.
55 Pounds of Thrust
Best for:
- Technical poling skiffs
- Small flats boats
- Lightweight aluminum boats
- Protected waters
Shop: Riptide Terrova 55 (54") | Riptide Terrova 55 (60")
80 Pounds of Thrust
Best for:
- Most bay boats
- Multi-species fishing boats
- Moderate wind
- Inshore fishing
This is one of the most popular choices because it balances performance, runtime, and cost.
Shop: Riptide Terrova 80 (54") | Riptide Terrova 80 (60") | Riptide Terrova 80 (72")
90 Pounds (QUEST)
The brushless QUEST platform delivers excellent torque, making it ideal for:
- Larger bay boats
- Heavy fishing loads
- Frequent saltwater use
Many anglers find the 90 lb QUEST performs more confidently than older brushed motors with similar ratings because of its improved efficiency and torque delivery.
Shop: Terrova QUEST 90/115 (60") | Terrova QUEST 90/115 (72")
112–115 Pounds
Recommended for:
- Large bay boats
- Center consoles
- Offshore fishing
- Heavy current
- Windy conditions
If you're often fishing around bridges, passes, or coastal inlets, the additional thrust helps maintain precise boat positioning.
Shop: Riptide Terrova 112 (60") | Riptide Terrova 112 (72") | Riptide Terrova 112 (87") | Terrova QUEST 90/115 (87")
Should You Buy More Thrust Than You Need?
In many cases, yes. Running a larger trolling motor at 40–60% power is often quieter and more efficient than running a smaller motor at full power all day. It also provides additional control when weather conditions change unexpectedly.
Choosing the Correct Shaft Length
Selecting the correct shaft length is just as important as choosing the right thrust. A shaft that's too short can allow the propeller to come out of the water in waves, reducing boat control. A shaft that's too long may be unnecessary and can make storage more difficult.
Read our complete guide: How to Choose the Right Shaft Length for Your Trolling Motor.
General Recommendations
| Shaft Length | Best For |
|---|---|
| 54" | Flats boats, bass boats, and smaller bay boats |
| 60" | Most bay boats |
| 72" | Large bay boats and center consoles |
| 87" | Offshore center consoles with higher bows |
How to Measure
- Measure from the mounting surface on the bow down to the waterline.
- Add approximately:
- 20 inches for calm conditions
- 22–25 inches for moderate chop
- 25–30 inches for offshore or rough-water use
When in doubt, choose the longer shaft if your boat regularly encounters waves or swell.
MEGA Side Imaging®, MEGA Down Imaging®, or Dual Spectrum CHIRP?
Minn Kota offers several integrated sonar options depending on the model. Understanding the differences can help you avoid paying for features you won't use.
Dual Spectrum CHIRP
Best for anglers who want traditional sonar, excellent target separation, fish arches, and bottom contour detail. Ideal for recreational anglers and most inshore fishermen.
MEGA Down Imaging®
Provides highly detailed views directly beneath the boat. Great for brush piles, rock structure, wrecks, and bottom transitions. Ideal for anglers who spend time vertically fishing or targeting specific structure.
MEGA Side Imaging®
Scans both sides of your boat, making it easier to locate weed lines, oyster bars, bait schools, drop-offs, and fish holding away from the boat. If you already own a compatible Humminbird display and spend time searching for structure before fishing, this option is often worth the investment.
Understanding Spot-Lock®
Spot-Lock has changed the way many anglers fish. Instead of dropping a physical anchor, the trolling motor uses GPS to maintain your position automatically.
Spot-Lock is perfect for:
- Bridge pilings
- Oyster bars
- Wrecks
- Reefs
- Dock fishing
- Vertical jigging
- Live bait fishing
Many anglers report using Spot-Lock dozens of times during a single day on the water.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Buying Too Little Thrust
Choosing the smallest motor to save money often leads to disappointment when fishing in wind or current.
Choosing the Wrong Shaft Length
A shaft that's too short can lose contact with the water in rough conditions, reducing steering and GPS performance. See our shaft length guide before you buy.
Buying Features You Won't Use
If you rarely change fishing locations during the day, you may not benefit enough from Auto Stow & Deploy to justify the additional cost of an Ulterra.
Using the Wrong Batteries
Performance depends on having the correct battery system. Always match the motor's voltage requirements (12V, 24V, or 36V) and consider high-quality lithium batteries if they're appropriate for your setup. Read our guide: 24V vs. 36V Trolling Motor Batteries: Which One Should You Choose?
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Riptide Terrova automatically deploy?
No. The Riptide Terrova uses manual deployment. If you want automatic deployment and stowing, choose a Riptide Ulterra or Ulterra QUEST.
Is QUEST worth the extra money?
For larger boats, frequent saltwater use, or anglers who regularly fish in wind and current, the improved efficiency, torque, and brushless technology make QUEST a worthwhile upgrade.
Does Spot-Lock work without a fish finder?
Yes. Spot-Lock uses the trolling motor's GPS system and does not require a compatible fish finder to function. Compatible Humminbird units can provide additional control and integration, but they're optional.
Can I use a freshwater trolling motor in saltwater?
We don't recommend it. Saltwater environments are much more corrosive. Riptide motors are specifically designed with corrosion-resistant materials and components for marine use.
Which Riptide model offers the best value?
For many anglers, the standard Riptide Terrova delivers the best balance of performance, features, and price. If you own a larger boat or fish in demanding conditions, the Terrova QUEST may offer greater long-term value.
